EMIL REDMON'S COW Stories From the Farm and Ranch Return to the Index |
Tony Meseke
A lifelong farmer/stockman, James "Tony" Meseke lives in the house where he was born. In fact, Tony has lived his entire life in the Spring Creek community west of Alma, Kansas. Hereford cattle were his favorite until black-hided cattle "became the rage" (and paid a premium). The family continues to raise Black Angus today. It took a lot of patience to work with his father, who was almost completely deaf but family was then, and continues to be today, a priority. At 85, Tony—always more comfortable on a tractor than a horse—can still be found helping with farmwork and the cow herd. In the Fall of each year, a family "Mulligan" (a social gathering centered around big kettle of Mulligan Stew cooked over an open fire) is held at the "old home place" and Tony supervises to make sure it is done right. Tony loves to share history (both family and local) with the younger generations and he served for many years as a board member of the Wabaunsee County Historical Society and Museum. Mark Feiden and Rob Meseke met with Tony on June 4, 2019, at the Volland Store in Volland, Kansas.
