Stories From the Farm and Ranch

Jim Hoy 1939-2025

Dr. James F. (Jim) Hoy was Professor Emeritus of English, and Director Emeritus of the Center for Great Plains Studies, at Emporia State Univirsity, Emporia, Kansas. Reared on a stock ranch near Cassoday, Kansas, he lived in the Flint Hills area all of his life—except for graduate school in Missouri and a teaching stint in Idaho. Jim was a folklorist and fifth-generation Flint Hills rancher who could be found cowboying, on son Josh's ranch, into his eighties. Among Jim's dozen or so books are Cowboys and Kansas, Flint Hills Cowboys, Cowboy's Lament: A Life on the Open Range, My Flint Hills, Plains Folk, and Gathering Strays: Stories from Kansas and the Southwestern Plains.

Jim was a very special friend to Emil Redmon's Cow. Without his encouragement and mentorship, it is unlikely that the project would have grown beyond the first few interviews. Jim passed away on February 23, 2025.

Mark Feiden and Farrell Hoy visited with Jim at the Flying H Ranch outside of Cassoday, Kansas, on January 19, 2020.
